Best Speed Dating Questions to Ask at a Singles Event

Table of Contents

If you have ever attended a speed dating event, you already know how quickly five minutes can disappear.

You sit down, introduce yourself and then someone asks, “So, what do you do?” Before you know it, the conversation feels like a job interview. You exchange the same basic information you have already shared several times that evening, the bell rings and neither person learned much about the other.

There is nothing technically wrong with asking where someone works, where they are from or how long they have lived in Knoxville. But those questions rarely create a spark—and everyone else in the room is probably asking them too.

As a professional matchmaker and dating coach, I have seen that the most memorable conversations are not always the longest or the most serious. They are the ones where two people become genuinely curious about each other.

That is the purpose of speed dating. You are not supposed to learn someone’s entire life story in one mini-date. You are simply trying to discover whether there is enough interest, ease and compatibility to continue the conversation.

Here are the best speed dating questions to help you do exactly that.

Why the Questions You Ask Matter

People sometimes put too much pressure on themselves before attending a Knoxville speed dating event. They believe they need the perfect introduction, the funniest story or an instant wave of chemistry.

You do not need to perform. You need to be present.

Research on getting-acquainted conversations has found that people who ask more questions—especially follow-up questions—tend to be better liked by the person they are speaking with. That makes sense. A thoughtful follow-up communicates, “I heard you, and I am interested in knowing more.”

This is an important difference. Asking question after question from a list can feel like an interrogation. Listening to an answer and getting curious creates a conversation.

If your date says their ideal Saturday includes hiking and trying a new restaurant, do not immediately jump to your next prepared question. Ask which trail they love, what restaurant they recently discovered or whether they prefer a planned weekend or a spontaneous one.

The best question may be the one you ask first. The connection usually begins with the question that comes next.

7 Great Questions to Start a Speed Date

These are light enough for the beginning of a conversation, but they reveal far more personality than the usual small talk.

1. What does your perfect Saturday look like?

This is one of my favorite speed dating questions because it gives you a quick look at someone’s real lifestyle. Are they hiking in the Smokies, watching football, working in the yard, meeting friends downtown or enjoying a quiet morning at home?

There is no right answer. You are listening for whether your lives might naturally fit together.

2. What is something you are really looking forward to right now?

The answer could be a trip, a family visit, a concert, a professional goal or simply cooler weather in East Tennessee. It brings positive energy into the conversation and tells you what currently matters to that person.

3. What is something you could talk about for hours?

Ask this and watch the person change when they begin discussing something they genuinely love. Passion is attractive, even when the two of you do not share the exact same interest.

4. Are you more “make a reservation” or “see where the night takes us”?

This is playful, but it also reveals something useful. You may discover whether someone is a planner, spontaneous or a little of both.

5. What instantly puts you in a good mood?

This is easy to answer and often leads to a warm, natural exchange. Music, dogs, coffee, exercise, sunshine, family and a drive through the mountains are all openings for a good follow-up question.

6. What is your most controversial harmless opinion?

Keep the word “harmless” in this question. We are talking about pineapple on pizza, whether brunch is overrated or which Tennessee football tradition is best—not an argument about politics five minutes after meeting.

7. What are you slightly ridiculous but surprisingly good at?

This question gives someone permission to be playful. It may uncover a hidden talent, an unusual hobby or a funny story you will actually remember at the end of the night.

7 Questions That Reveal Lifestyle and Compatibility

Chemistry matters, but chemistry by itself does not tell you whether two people can build a healthy relationship. These questions help you learn how someone lives without sounding as though you are checking boxes.

8. If you could leave tomorrow for a three-day getaway, where would you go?

Their answer may reveal whether they love adventure, luxury, nature, cities or relaxing close to home. If they say Gatlinburg, Charleston or Italy, ask what they would want to do once they arrived.

9. What kind of people do you naturally gravitate toward?

Listen to the qualities they mention. Warm? Ambitious? Funny? Calm? Curious? People often reveal their own values when describing the people they enjoy.

10. What is something you would like more of in your life?

This can be fun, meaningful or both. They might say travel, balance, time with family, live music, peace or adventure. Their answer can show whether they are creating space for a relationship or merely saying they want one.

11. What is something you have always wanted to try?

This opens the door to future-oriented conversation without jumping ahead too quickly. It can also inspire an unexpectedly good idea for a second date.

12. What are you currently trying to get better at?

You can learn a great deal from the way someone talks about growth. The goal is not to find a flawless person. I would much rather meet someone who is self-aware and willing to grow.

13. What is one experience you think everyone should have at least once?

This question can lead almost anywhere: travel, parenting, volunteering, living alone, going to therapy, starting a business or seeing the sunrise from a mountain.

14. If money and work were not factors, how would you spend the next year?

This question reveals interests and priorities that may not appear in a discussion about someone’s career. It also gives you a glimpse of what their version of a meaningful life looks like.

7 Questions That Can Create a Real Connection

These questions move a little deeper. They are still appropriate for speed dating, but I would use them after the conversation already feels comfortable.

15. What quality do you appreciate most in another person?

Kindness, loyalty, humor, honesty, ambition and emotional maturity mean different things to different people. Ask why that quality matters to them.

16. What does a really good relationship look like to you?

This is direct, and I am perfectly comfortable with direct. You are attending a singles event to meet someone, not to pretend you do not care about relationships.

Pay attention to whether their answer focuses only on what a partner should provide or includes what they are prepared to contribute too.

17. What is a small thing someone can do that makes you feel appreciated?

The answer offers a simple look at how someone experiences care. It could be a thoughtful text, physical affection, help with a task, quality time or remembering their coffee order.

18. What is something you are proud of that people would not guess about you?

This gives the person an opportunity to share a meaningful part of their story without asking them to disclose anything overly personal.

19. What is something you have changed your mind about in the last few years?

A person who can reconsider an opinion usually has some capacity for reflection. Their answer may also show how they respond to new experiences and information.

20. If your friends described you to someone you were about to date, what would they say?

This is a much better version of “Tell me about yourself.” It often produces a more honest and colorful answer.

21. What is your idea of an unexpectedly great date?

You may hear something far more interesting than dinner and drinks. It also reveals what makes an experience feel special to that person.

4 Wildcard Questions They Will Remember

Use these when the conversation needs a little energy or when you want to end on something memorable.

22. What makes you laugh every single time?

Shared laughter creates ease quickly. Even if you have different senses of humor, the answer usually leads to a good story.

23. What is something people take far too seriously?

This question can reveal humor, perspective and whether the person knows how to relax. Again, keep it light rather than turning the date into a debate.

24. What is the best trip you have ever taken?

Travel questions work well because they invite stories, not one-word answers. If the person does not enjoy traveling, simply ask about their favorite local experience instead.

25. What question do you wish people would ask you more often?

This may be the best question on the entire list. Instead of deciding what matters about someone, you give them the opportunity to tell you.

Questions I Would Avoid During a Five-Minute Speed Date

Being intentional does not mean asking every serious question immediately.

I would avoid leading with questions about:

  • Ex-partners and past relationship drama
  • Income or personal finances
  • Sex
  • Trauma
  • Exact marriage timelines
  • Why someone is “still single”
  • Highly divisive political subjects
  • Anything that sounds like a demand or accusation

These topics may eventually matter. A first five-minute meeting is rarely the right place to investigate them.

I also recommend avoiding rapid-fire questions such as, “Do you want children? Are you religious? Where do you see yourself in five years?” Those may be reasonable compatibility topics, but delivery matters. If you treat the person across from you like an application, you may miss who they actually are.

How to Be Memorable at a Knoxville Speed Dating Event

Good questions help, but how you make someone feel will matter even more.

Come in with an open mind. Put your phone away. Make eye contact. Listen instead of planning what you will say next. If an answer interests you, stay with it for a moment.

And please do not decide that someone is not your person within the first 20 seconds because they are not your usual “type.” Physical attraction is important, but instant fireworks are not the only sign of potential. Sometimes the best connections begin with comfort, curiosity and a desire to talk again.

Your goal is not to impress every single person in the room. Your goal is to have several genuine conversations and notice who makes you want one more.

That is enough for a first meeting.
